About a year ago, “flatform” sandals hit runways from L.A. to Milan and fashion people went crazy for them. Me? Not so much. In my humble, fashion-outsider opinion, they were super ugly. Boxy and masculine, I stuck to my totally-flat sandals, or my beloved wedges for height.
But 12 months later, I’m recanting my original attitude on the trend. Why? Well, time has only increased the public’s demand for the style, which in turn has increased production—meaning, the shoe is being fabricated by pretty much every maker on the market in hundreds of amazing textures and colors that previously weren’t available. Also, I’ve succumbed to the reality that the flatform is crazy comfortable, while also adding height. Which is the very same reason why I heart my wedges so hard.
The biggest designers out there—Prada, Miu Miu, Gucci, Stella McCartney—are making gorgeous flatforms that I’d love to stock my closet with this spring, but alas, their price tags are crazy high. Instead, I’ve found 15 pairs that are equally cute—the Sole Diva number in fuschia had me at first sight—and at price points that are far more palatable. (All but one are under $200; 10 are under $100.) So if you wanna be on-trend this spring, flatforms are about to be your new favorite go-tos. Bonus: Being able to throw on a pair in the morning—that will raise you a few inches!—and wear them straight through nighttime with nary a blister or aching heel.
